What we hold, and what we never see.

Last updated 9 September 2026.

Your survey never leaves your phone

Photographs, notes, findings, vessel details, sea-trial figures and the finished report are written to storage on the device that took them. They are not uploaded, not backed up to us, and not readable by us. There is no account to sign into and no server that holds them.

A report or a working file leaves the device only when you send it — by mail, message, or into Files. At that point it goes where you send it, not to us.

The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: if you lose the device and have not exported your work, we cannot recover it, because we never had it.

The one exception

Activating a licence

Freeboard makes exactly one network request of its own: when you enter an activation code. It sends three things — the code, a random identifier generated on first launch, and a word describing the kind of device (“iPhone”, “Android”).

That identifier is created by the app and means nothing outside it. It is not your device’s serial number, not an advertising identifier, and not anything that follows you between apps. Its only job is to count how many devices a licence is running on.

In reply the app receives a short-lived signed token and the letterhead belonging to that licence, so your name and logo can head the report.

What our licence records contain

When a licence is issued, we hold the details needed to identify the holder and to print their letterhead: an email address, and — where provided — a name, company, professional credentials, address, telephone, website, tax number and logo.

Alongside it we keep, for each activated device, that random identifier, the device description, and the dates of first and most recent activation. Nothing else.

These records live on Cloudflare infrastructure. We do not sell them, share them, or use them for advertising, and there is no analytics or tracking of any kind in the app.

Your rights

Write to info@jtnmarine.com and we will tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. Deleting a licence record ends the licence: the app keeps working, and reports simply go out under the Freeboard mark instead of yours.

There is nothing to ask us for regarding your surveys themselves — those are on your device, and you can delete them there.

Children

Freeboard is a tool for working marine surveyors. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly hold information about them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. Material changes affecting licence holders will also be sent to the address on the licence.
